Adolph de Meyer (1868-1946) was a German-born Scottish photographer and a leading figure of pictorialist photography, active from the late 19th to the early 20th century. He specialized in portrait and fashion photography, renowned for his soft lighting, refined compositions, and romantic atmospheres, integrating traditional painting principles into his photographic work. De Meyer photographed European and American aristocrats as well as Hollywood stars, and contributed to magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair, pioneering modern fashion photography and exerting a profound influence on the development of photographic art.  

Adolph de Meyer’s masterpiece “A Street in China” (1912) is a quintessential example of pictorialist photography. The image depicts everyday life on a Chinese street, using soft lighting and carefully composed framing to create a poetic atmosphere.
