Modica|Master Ranking
Andrea Modica (1960-) is an important figure in American contemporary photography, known for her black-and-white large-format photography, sensitive portraiture, and long-term documentary projects. She holds a strong academic position in contemporary photography. However, compared with first-tier figures in photographic history such as Cindy Sherman, Paul Strand, and Edward Weston, Modica is more appropriately regarded as an important contemporary photographer / second-tier master-level artist, rather than a first-tier figure in the history of photography.

Treadwell, NY, 1998 and Treadwell, NY, 2000 belong to her long-term series documenting the community and residents of Treadwell, New York. Using a large-format camera and finely detailed black-and-white imagery, Modica portrays local young people, families, friends, and everyday rural life. Her photographs often possess a quiet, intimate, and subtly mysterious quality, combining individual portraiture with collective memory and reflecting her sustained interest in growth, identity, time, and a sense of place.++++++++++Modica’s work is held by major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her original large-format photographs have significant **contemporary, documentary, scholarly, and museum-collection value; 35mm slides are more appropriately regarded as documentary materials for the study of photographic history and image circulation.
