《Gentleman Farmer, 1924》(《绅士农场主,1924》)属于桑德著名的社会肖像项目 《20世纪的人》(People of the 20th Century)。

《People of the 20th Century》更被视为摄影史上的经典项目。

August Sander|Master of Documentary Photography

August Sander (1876–1964) was one of the most important German photographers of the 20th century and ranks among the first tier of masters in photographic history. Through systematic portraiture of people from different social classes, professions, and backgrounds, he became a foundational figure in modern documentary and typological photography.

Gentleman Farmer, 1924 belongs to Sander’s landmark project People of the 20th Century. With a restrained and direct approach to portraiture, the photograph presents the sitter and his social identity through clothing, posture, facial expression, and environmental details. Rather than simply documenting an individual, Sander sought to create a visual archive of German society by portraying different professions and social groups.

Sander’s work is held by major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met), the Art Institute of Chicago, the J. Paul Getty Museum, Centre Pompidou, and Museum Ludwig in Cologne. People of the 20th Century is regarded as a landmark project in photographic history. Vintage original prints hold significant social-historical, photographic, typological, scholarly, and museum-collection value. For an image museum, Gentleman Farmer is particularly valuable for studying portraiture, social class, and modern German visual history.
