《Bound to Fail》(Self-Portrait as a Fountain),1966
Bruce Nauman|Master of Contemporary Art
Bruce Nauman (1941-) is one of the most important American artists from the late 20th century to the present and ranks among the first tier of masters in contemporary art history. Working across photography, video, sculpture, installation, neon, and performance, he has had a profound influence on conceptual art, body art, video art, and installation practice. He received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1999, the Praemium Imperiale in 2004, and represented the United States at the Venice Biennale in 2009, where he again received the Golden Lion.
Bound to Fail (Self-Portrait as a Fountain), 1966 is one of Nauman’s important early photographic works. The artist uses his own body to imitate a fountain, transforming the traditional art-historical relationship between the body, sculpture, and fountain into a humorous and provocative conceptual gesture. By combining **the body, action, photography, and artistic identity, the work reflects Nauman’s influential idea that almost anything an artist does can become art. It had a significant impact on subsequent body art, performance art, and conceptual photography.
Nauman’s work is held by major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). His original photographs and early historical editions hold significant art-historical, conceptual-art, photographic, and museum-collection value.
