C.E. Le Munyon (July 4, 1860 – April 21, 1929) was born in Washington State, USA. Young, talented, and full of energy, he came to Beijing in 1900 as a military photographer with the American contingent of the Eight-Nation Alliance, traveling from the Philippines. His photographs document the Eight-Nation Alliance’s entry into Beijing and its aftermath. Afterward, he returned to the Philippines.

Le Munyon disliked running a studio for profit, preferring to photograph ordinary people’s daily lives outdoors. However, for livelihood, he established a studio in Hong Kong around 1902, primarily dealing in photographic equipment imported from New York. Between 1904 and 1905, he worked in Shanghai, then traveled to Tianjin, Beijing, and the Russian Far East, finally settling in Beijing in 1905, where he remained until his death in 1929.

In 1909, he photographed the funeral of Empress Dowager Cixi and the cornerstone-laying ceremony of Peking Union Medical College Hospital. During this period, he also documented the daily lives of many old Beijing residents. Le Munyon was a tragic figure—romantic to a fault, he pursued art passionately while neglecting his financial foundation, leading to perpetual financial difficulties and debts owed to friends until his death. His major works are now held in the National Museum of Ethnology in the Netherlands.
