"Chinese Girls" is a photographic series created by American photographer Mervyn D. Silberstein/默文·西尔伯斯坦 (1885-1957) in San Francisco’s Chinatown during the 1910s-1920s. Born in San Francisco and raised in Healdsburg, California, Silberstein developed an early passion for photography while in college. After graduation, he worked as a newspaper writer before opening his own studio, where he sold artistic prints and provided portrait services. Around 1909, he returned to San Francisco and became fascinated by Chinatown, producing numerous images of Chinese children, some posed and others captured with natural spontaneity.

Silberstein’s achievement lies in blending documentary observation with refined artistic sensibility. The “Chinese Girls” series not only portrays the innocence of childhood but also reflects a strong humanistic vision through its use of light, composition, and atmosphere. His works were carefully produced, often bordered with platinum, mounted on gray hard card stock, and signed by hand, underscoring his ambition to elevate photography to the realm of fine art.

Today, Silberstein’s Chinatown photographs are recognized as rare visual records of early 20th-century Chinese American life and as significant contributions to American photographic history. Several of these works, including the “Chinese Girls” series, have entered private collections and museum holdings, where they are esteemed for both their artistic value and historical significance.
