“The Life of a Chinese Lady” is a distinguished portfolio of lithographs, issued under the supervision of the Austro-Hungarian diplomat, sinologist, and cultural historian Viktor von Tschusi zu Schmidhoffen (1876–1932). Active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, von Tschusi dedicated his career to Sino-Western cultural exchange and the study of Oriental art. Serving as consul in Tianjin from 1895 to 1901, he witnessed first-hand the Boxer Rebellion and took part in subsequent diplomatic negotiations. His later postings in Shanghai and Hankou further deepened his engagement with Chinese society and culture. Upon returning to Austria in 1920, von Tschusi was appointed director of the Habsburg Imperial Family’s Hereditary Trust Library in Vienna, a position he held until his death in 1932. It was in this capacity that he organized and published the present series.

The portfolio comprises twelve finely executed hand-colored lithographs, notable for their refined printing and mounting techniques. The images derive from original pith paper paintings preserved in the imperial collection of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, which von Tschusi carefully adapted and published. Through this work, scenes of nineteenth-century Chinese women’s daily life were, for the first time, systematically reproduced in lithographic form, offering European audiences a vivid visual encounter with Chinese domestic culture.


《一位中国仕女的日常生活》（The Life of a Chinese Lady）是一套由奥匈帝国外交官、汉学家及文化史学者 鲁道夫·帕耶尔·冯·图恩（Viktor von Tschusi zu Schmidhoffen, 1876–1932） 监制出版的彩色石版画集。冯·图恩活跃于19世纪末至20世纪初，毕生致力于推动中西文化交流与东方艺术研究。1895年至1901年，他曾出任天津领事，亲历并参与了义和团运动期间的外交谈判，随后又在上海、汉口等地任职。1920年回国后，他出任维也纳哈布斯堡皇室世袭信托图书馆馆长（任期至1932年），并在此期间整理出版了此套画集。

全套版画分为四个主题：
一、 闺阁雅艺：描绘书法、绘画、刺绣等才艺活动。
二、 丝竹之韵：展现乐器演奏场景。
三、 欢宴之娱：呈现品酒、吸烟、舞蹈等宴乐场面。
四、 妆奁之事：表现插花、博弈（如围棋）、梳妆等闺中日常

该作品共收录 十二幅精美的手工上色石版画，在印制与装裱工艺上极为考究。其蓝本取自奥地利皇帝 弗朗茨·约瑟夫一世（Franz Joseph I） 所珍藏的通草纸本原画，经冯·图恩整理后首次以石版画形式系统再现19世纪中国女性的日常生活场景。这套作品不仅是欧洲观众了解中国社会与女性生活的重要窗口，同时也是中西艺术交流史上独具价值的视觉文献。
