Cindy Sherman|Master of Contemporary Photography
Cindy Sherman (1954-) is one of the most important American photographers and contemporary artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. She ranks among the first tier of masters in contemporary photography and is a major figure in conceptual photography, feminist art, and the study of identity. Through self-portraiture, role-playing, and carefully constructed settings, she challenges conventional representations of women, identity, and visual culture.
Untitled #109 (1988-1990) is one of Sherman’s best-known series. Drawing on religious paintings, aristocratic portraits, and classical European art, Sherman reconstructs historical figures through costumes, prosthetics, makeup, and staged settings. The works resemble traditional portraits while revealing their theatrical and artificial qualities, questioning established ideas about women, identity, beauty, and authenticity in art history.
Sherman’s work is held by major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Her work has had a lasting influence on contemporary photography, feminist art, and conceptual practice, and holds significant art-historical, museum, and scholarly value.
