Edward S. Curtis (1868–1952) was a renowned American photographer, anthropologist, and publisher, famous for his photographs of Native Americans and their cultures. His photographic career spanned from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. His most notable work is The North American Indian (1907–1930), a 20-volume series that systematically documented the lives, rituals, portraits, and customs of over 80 tribes. Curtis pursued a pictorialist style, emphasizing light and shadow, composition, and delicate emotional expression, making his images not only valuable anthropologically but also highly artistic. He often spent months or even years living with tribal members in remote regions to produce authentic, respectful, and profound photographic records. Curtis’s work combines documentary and artistic value and is considered one of the most important visual records of Native American history and culture.

Curtis’s works are held in numerous prestigious museums and institutions worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Art Institute of Chicago, the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institution. In addition, important Canadian and European museums also collect his photographs for exhibition and research. Curtis is celebrated not only for his outstanding photographic skills but also for his respect for Native American cultures and his dedication to documenting them, making him one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century.

(The Metropolitan Museum of Art)、华盛顿特区国家美术馆(National Gallery of Art)、芝加哥艺术学院(Art Institute of Chicago)、旧金山艺术宫(Palace of Fine Arts)以及史密森学会的国家人类学博物馆(National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution)。
