Emil Riisfeldt (1846-1893) was born on April 29, 1846, in Denmark. He had two brothers, and the 1855 Danish census shows that the three brothers lived with their parents. Little is known about Emil’s childhood, but historian Sandy Barr has traced his descendants in Australia. Emil and his brother Alfred traveled around the world together in the late 1860s or early 1870s before eventually settling in Australia.

In October 1871, Emil arrived in Hong Kong to work for the experienced Chinese photographer Lai Fong / Afong, whom he described as a highly talented photographer. A year later, he took over the photography studio of British photographer William Pryor Floyd and managed it independently. Three years later, he left Hong Kong for Australia. Historical records show that in December 1873, he traveled as a passenger by sailing ship from Melbourne to Sydney. A year later, he married Emma Pyle, with whom he had two children.
In 1874, Emil opened a photography studio at 122 Bourke Street East, Melbourne. By 1876, he had settled in Sydney, where he operated multiple photography studios simultaneously. Between 1883 and 1884, he also participated in the Calcutta International Exhibition. Emil Riisfeldt died in 1893 in Newtown, New South Wales, Australia. It has been suggested that his extravagant lifestyle and poor financial management ultimately left him in debt at the time of his death.
