Eugène Atget (1857-1927) was one of the most important early photographers in photographic history and ranks among the first tier of masters. Best known for his extensive documentation of Parisian streets, architecture, shops, urban spaces, and everyday life, Atget’s work forms an important link between 19th-century documentary photography and 20th-century modernism.

Marchand abat-jours (Lamp-Shade Merchant), 1899-1900 is an important example of Atget’s early documentation of Paris. The photograph records a shop selling lampshades and its window display, reflecting his sustained interest in commercial spaces, street life, and everyday details. Rather than relying on monumental subjects, Atget preserved the character of Paris through direct and understated observation, creating an important visual record of the city’s cultural and commercial life.

Atget’s work is held by major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met), the J.
