Félix Bonfils (1831-1885) was a renowned 19th-century French photographer and pioneer of travel photography, celebrated for documenting the landscapes, architecture, and daily life of the Middle East. In 1867, he and his wife Lydie established the Bonfils photography studio in Beirut, becoming among the first European photographers to settle in the Ottoman Empire and work professionally in the region. Bonfils primarily focused on travel photography, capturing ancient sites, religious monuments, and local people in Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Turkey. His works combine artistic vision with documentary value.

His photographic style emphasized detail and composition, often using 19th-century glass negatives and albumen prints, which rendered refined light, shadow, and depth. Bonfils’ work was highly sought after by travelers, scholars, and collectors of his time. His photographic series Souvenirs d’Orient (1877–1878) won awards at the Paris World Exposition, offering European audiences a vivid portrayal of the Orient.

Bonfils’ works are held in major international museums and institutions. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York houses his images of the Parthenon and other Middle Eastern monuments; the Getty Museum and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York hold his landscapes of Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt; the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art preserves his photographs of Palmyra; additionally, his works are included in the collections of the French National Library and several European museums.

Bonfils was not only an exceptional artistic photographer but also provided invaluable visual documentation for the study of 19th-century Middle Eastern history, architecture, and culture. His photographs combine scholarly significance with aesthetic appeal, making him a leading figure in early travel photography.
