Hanz von Peckhamer (1895-1965) was a renowned German professional photographer, celebrated for his deep interest in Chinese culture and his distinctive photographic perspective. Born into a family of photographers, he was exposed to the art from an early age. Peckhamer began photographing Chinese subjects as early as 1915, during his service in the Austrian Navy aboard the cruiser SMS Kaiserin Elisabeth, which was stationed off Tianjin’s Dagu Port. When World War I broke out, the ship was scuttled in Jiaozhou Bay during the Siege of Qingdao, and Peckhamer, along with his comrades, was imprisoned at Wanshou Temple. During this confinement, he extensively photographed his surroundings, later recalling, “There, I captured almost everything I could. Every time I opened my eyes, these images were before me.”

After the war, Peckhamer returned to China multiple times, traveling across the country to capture Beijing’s streets, local customs, and Chinese nude art. He published China’s first nude photography collection, Hundred Beauties, and produced influential photo albums such as Beijing and China and the Chinese, documenting the social life and cultural landscape of early 20th-century China. His work is notable not only for its artistic innovation but also for its mastery of light, composition, and the human figure, earning recognition in both European and Chinese photographic circles.

Peckhamer’s photographs hold significant historical and cultural value and are preserved in major museums and private collections, including the Berlin State Museums, the Munich Museum of Photography, and several photographic art institutions in China. His works are frequently exhibited in international photography shows and are regarded as an important bridge between Eastern and Western photographic traditions. Through his profound artistic skill and extensive body of work, Peckhamer left a lasting legacy in the development of 20th-century European and Chinese photography.
