Hang Cheong Photographic was founded around 1875 in the French Concession of Tianjin by Cantonese merchant Huang Guohua and photographer Wang Ziming, making it one of the earliest professional photo studios in the city. The studio was forced to close during the invasion of the Eight-Nation Alliance, but later reopened on Gu Yi Street, a bustling commercial district. In 1904, salt merchant Wang Kuizhang took over the business, relocating it to Asahi Street in the Japanese Concession and renaming it “Dingchang Photo Studio.” With new equipment and updated backdrops, Dingchang quickly grew in reputation and scale, becoming a leader in Tianjin’s photographic industry. After Wang Ziming’s death in 1912, two of his long-time apprentices, Li Yaoting and Wang Runquan, took over and renamed it “Dingzhang Photo Studio (Ting Chang).” At its peak, Dingzhang operated a main photography building, several studios, and employed 60–70 staff, making it the largest photo studio in Tianjin at the time.
Artistically, Dingzhang Photo Studio achieved remarkable success. It produced portraits of prominent figures such as Li Yuanhong, Mei Lanfang, and Zhou Xinfang, and even photographed Li Dazhao. In 1924, when Sun Yat-sen visited Tianjin, studio photographer Li Yaoting personally created his portrait, leaving behind a historically significant image. Combining Western photographic techniques with elements of Chinese aesthetics, the studio’s portraits were distinguished by elegant composition and refined use of light and shadow, representing the unique style of early 20th-century Chinese portrait photography.
Today, surviving works from Hang Cheong and Dingzhang Photo Studios are preserved in institutions such as the Tianjin Museum, the National Library of China, and research collections abroad. These photographs not only document the urban development and social life of Tianjin but also stand as invaluable cultural and artistic legacies in the history of modern Chinese photography.
