Henri Cartier-Bresson: Master Status and the China Series
Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) was one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century and is widely regarded as the father of modern photojournalism and the pioneer of the concept of the Decisive Moment. Ranked among the first tier of photographic masters alongside Ansel Adams, Margaret Bourke-White, and Robert Capa, he profoundly shaped documentary, street, and visual narrative photography.

In 1949, commissioned by Life magazine, Cartier-Bresson traveled to China to document the historic transition from the final years of the Nationalist government to the founding of the People’s Republic of China. His China series captured financial turmoil in Shanghai, everyday urban life, the arrival of the People’s Liberation Army in Beijing, and the dramatic encounter between an old society and a new era. Through precise compositions, spontaneous moments, and deep humanistic insight, these photographs became important visual records of 20th-century Chinese history.

His photographs are held in major international collections, including the **Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), George Eastman Museum, Centre Pompidou, Victoria and Albert Museum, and Fotomuseum Winterthur. These collections affirm Cartier-Bresson’s enduring status as a master of modern photography and highlight the historical significance of his 1949 China series.
