James Valentine (1815–1879) was a renowned 19th-century Scottish photographer, best known for founding a photography publishing company in Dundee, Scotland. He introduced portrait photography into his family business in 1851 and, by the 1860s, focused on landscape photography, particularly capturing the scenic beauty of Scotland. His works primarily targeted middle- and upper-class tourists and were produced in formats such as deluxe albums, postcards, and stereographs.
Valentine gained widespread recognition after the Tay Bridge Disaster in 1879. He was commissioned to photograph the collapsed bridge, and these images were used as evidence in court as well as widely circulated, becoming significant historical documentation. Many of these photographs are now held by the Dundee City Library and the University of St Andrews Library.
Valentine’s works are also part of major museum and institutional collections worldwide, including Dundee City Library (UK), University of St Andrews Library (UK), National Galleries of Scotland (UK), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (USA), Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (USA), Fotomuseum Antwerpen (Belgium), International Center of Photography (USA), and Toledo Museum of Art (USA). These collections reflect not only the historical importance of Valentine’s photography but also his significant place in the history of photography.
