Laurie Anderson (1947-) is one of the most influential American artists in contemporary art, experimental music, and performance. She ranks among the first tier of important interdisciplinary artists in contemporary art history. Known for combining sound, electronic technology, video, installation, and live performance, Anderson has had a profound influence on sound art, digital art, and multimedia practices since the late 20th century.

Duets on Ice, Genoa, Italy, 1975 is one of Anderson’s most important early performance works. In the piece, the artist wears ice skates frozen into blocks of ice while playing the violin. The performance continues as the ice gradually melts, eventually making it impossible to continue. By combining the body, time, sound, environment, and chance, the work explores the temporary nature of performance, physical limitations, and the relationship between humans and their surroundings.
