Michael A. Smith (1951-2018) was an important American black-and-white photographer of the late 20th century and a key figure in the continuation of the tradition of pure photography. Working primarily with large-format photography, traditional silver gelatin darkroom printing, and photographic books, he explored light, space, time, and perception through images of landscapes, architecture, plants, and everyday environments.

Influenced by Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, and Minor White, Smith viewed photography as more than documentation—it was a form of artistic and spiritual expression through light, form, and craftsmanship. His 8×10 Contact Prints, made by directly exposing large-format negatives onto photographic paper without enlargement, preserve exceptional detail and tonal depth, making them highly valued among collectors.
