Paul Strand (1890-1976) was one of the most important American modernist photographers and a pioneer of photographic filmmaking. A first-tier figure in 20th-century photography, he helped transform photography from pictorialism toward modernist and direct photographic expression through sharp detail, geometric form, light, and social observation. His work is held by major institutions including MoMA, The Met, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Trees, Winter, near the River Po, Italy (1952) reflects Strand’s mature European period, depicting winter trees and the landscape around Italy’s Po River. It forms part of his important Italian photographic work and is held by the Art Institute of Chicago.

Portrait (1915) belongs to Strand’s formative New York period, when he developed his distinctive modernist approach to portraiture, urban subjects, and abstraction. His photographs from this period are regarded as key works in the development of modern photography.

Museum Collection Value: Strand’s work has major significance for photographic history, modernism, documentary practice, and photographic education. Vintage original prints have substantially greater museum and collecting value than later reproductions or 35mm slides, which are better regarded as historical and educational image documents.
