Peking Art Studio primarily focused on photographing Beijing’s renowned architectural landmarks, including the Temple of Heaven, the Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace, while also capturing numerous scenes of everyday urban life, providing a faithful record of Beijing during the Republican period. The studio’s photographs vary in size and are all accompanied by both Chinese and English descriptions. Of particular note, many works were exquisitely produced using silver gelatin prints hand-colored by artists, mounted on embossed cardstock. This distinctive technique not only imparts remarkable visual beauty to the photographs but also demands a high level of skill from the photographer, achieving a perfect fusion of traditional Chinese painting and photographic artistry. Works by Peking Art Studio are now held in the collections of several major international institutions, including the British Library, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and the Tokyo National Museum, serving as essential resources for the study of Republican-era Beijing imagery and hand-colored photography.
