Pierre Joseph Rossier (1829-1886) was a Swiss pioneer of early photography with profound expertise in the albumen print process. During the Second Opium War, he was commissioned to travel to Asia with the original plan of documenting the Anglo-French expedition in China. Although the mission was not realized, he spent several years in Asia and produced a significant body of valuable images. His journeys took him across China, the Philippines, Japan, and Siam. In Japan, as the first professional photographer, he laid the foundation for the development of local photography. Beyond creating important works himself, he also trained Japan’s first generation of photographers, including Ueno Hikoma, Maeda Genzō, and Horie Kuwajirō, directly shaping the beginnings of Japan’s photographic tradition.
In terms of artistic achievement, Rossier’s photography combined documentary value with artistic expression. Through rigorous composition and the careful use of light and shadow, he depicted both the social realities and natural landscapes of various Asian countries. His albumen prints, delicate and richly layered, not only fulfilled European audiences’ imagination of the East but also became essential visual texts for the study of 19th-century cultural exchanges between East and West.
As for museum collections, Rossier’s works are preserved in several major institutions, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in the United States, and local archives in Fribourg, Switzerland. These holdings attest to his lasting value and influence in the global history of photography and provide vital resources for future research into early images of Asia.
