Pun Lun Studio was founded by brothers Wan Chik-hing and Wan Leong-hoi in 1864 and became the most professional photographic studio in Hong Kong, operating until the early 1900s. Their father, Wan Di-nam, ran a fabric shop in Guangzhou, learned photography from visiting Americans, and taught it to his sons. The studio initially started in Hong Kong and later expanded to Fuzhou, Saigon, and Singapore.
Early works are extremely rare, as most photographs and negatives were destroyed in a 1876 fire. Pun Lun produced portraits, landscapes, and experimented with integrating traditional Chinese painting techniques into photography. The studio was especially renowned for CDV (carte de visite) photographs, small photographic cards widely used for sending portraits to friends and family, serving identification, business, and personal keepsake purposes. Despite their small size, CDVs commanded high prices, averaging around five dollars per card.
Leveraging Hong Kong’s strategic location, Pun Lun photographed Chinese officials, merchants, elite women, and visiting foreign sailors. Surviving works are highly valued and held in major collections, including the Hong Kong Museum of History, the Shanghai History Museum, and international institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum (London) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). These works are key resources for studying early photography in Hong Kong and East Asia.
