Sidney David Gamble (1890-1968) was an American socio-economist, humanitarian, and photographer. Between 1917 and 1932, he traveled to China four times, capturing a vast number of photographs that provide a valuable visual record of this critical period in Chinese history. Gamble served as an officer of the Beijing Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), overseeing social surveys and educational reform initiatives. He was one of the founders of the Sociology Department at Yenching University and also participated in the educational experiments conducted by the “Pingjiao” association in Ding County, during which he completed five social survey studies.

西德尼·甘博/Sidney David Gamble （1890年-1968年）是美国社会经济学家，人道主义者和摄影家。1917年到1932年间他四次来到中国拍摄了大量的照片，为中国这一重要历史时期留下了珍贵的影像档案。甘博是北京基督教青年会的干事，负责社会调查和教育改革方面的工作。他是燕京大学社会学系的创建者之一，还参与了“平教会”在定县的教育实验，期间他一共完成了五部社会调查作品；他还在中国西部地区游历，拍下了大量的珍贵照片。

In addition, Gamble traveled extensively in western China, taking numerous significant photographs. After returning to the United States, he continued his service with the YMCA until his death. Using his camera, Gamble created a comprehensive visual archive of China, consisting of a total of 5,000 black-and-white photographs, color slides, and thirty 16mm films. His collection documents events ranging from post-World War I victory celebrations in 1918, to student marches, speeches, and petitions during the May Fourth Movement in 1919, and Sun Yat-sen’s funeral in 1925. The images encompass urban and rural social life across northern, central, eastern, southwestern, and southern China, offering an unparalleled visual record of Chinese society during the early 20th century.
