Steve McCurry (born 1950) is one of the most influential contemporary documentary photographers, renowned for his vivid color portraits and deeply expressive images. His work often focuses on war, conflict, and marginalized communities, capturing not only the external environment but also the inner emotional states of his subjects. In 1984, while photographing in a refugee camp in Pakistan, McCurry encountered an Afghan girl with striking green eyes, disheveled hair, and a tense, haunting expression. This image, later titled Afghan Girl, was published by National Geographic in 1985 and quickly became one of the most recognized photographs in the world, symbolizing the resilience and vulnerability of war-affected populations.

The photograph is held in the collections of several of the world’s leading art and photography institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA); Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C.; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. These holdings underscore both the photograph’s artistic significance and its status as a lasting symbol of global visual culture and social history.
